The Burns Unit

The Cochabamba Children's burns unit, Viedma, is the leading treatment centre for paediatric burn injuries. But the unit is in dire need of money; equipment and qualified staff to ensure that the children receive treatment, care and support they desperately need to recuperate.

  • Basic medicine and medical tools including; Antibiotics, pain relief, syringes, drips, blood pressure monitors, bandages, nappies, antiseptic cream and spray, pressure suits (essential for burn treatment), surgical equipment and food.
  • A Parent/Child Fund: Children lie in pain and without treatment if the parents cannot afford prescriptions or medical costs. Treatment is not free in Bolivia. In addition parents often cannot visit their child due to travel costs or unable to leave work for any time and if they do make it they often sleep rough in the hospital grounds as they cannot afford a bed for the night. The fund will try to ensure no child lies in pain, scared and alone and they have their parents to comfort them if at all possible.
  • Specialist treatment and staff salaries: Including overseas specialists to visit, train and operate and a salary for doctors, nurses and carers (most are not paid and have to work a second job).

Rehabilitation Centre

However if things are to really change, we need to look at the long term needs of the children and the new rehabilitation centre will provide a safe paid for environment to treat children long term.

  • A home for long term residents undergoing treatment
  • A fully equipped post-treatment provision, focusing on Physiotherapy and Psychological support
  • Educational and training facilities
  • Support services for families

It is only by providing long-term care and support that we can truly make a difference, this unit is only possible thanks to your support we receive no government funding please support our work now click here to make a donation
