Volunteer Rachelle at work
2008 got off to a terrific start, as work at our long-term rehabilitation centre began!
Burn injuries need many months of treatment and the rehabilitation centre will provide this essential long-term care. The children will receive physio therapy, education, good food and importantly open family visits for the children in a comfortable environment. The hospital burns unit will then be free to treat the intensive care patients and give them the close attention they need when they are first admitted and post surgery.
The rehabilitation centre will also bring paid positions to Bolivian doctors, nurses and staff — which for Bolivia are very unusual, as most medical staff have to volunteer for many years until the scarce government paid positions arise, often working two or more jobs and 18 hour days.
It is a huge project and one that has needed a lot of support to get off the ground and now to maintain — with your help we know we can do it.
Maria, 8 years old, pictured here, is just one of the reasons the rehabilitation centre is urgently needed. Severely burned five years ago, Maria left the hospital unable to afford essential physical therapy and further treatment. She has just returned with severe skin contractions that need much surgery. Had Maria been given the opportunity to be rehabilitated with regular physio she would not be as she is now.
Now we will be able to provide this and so much more.
